A little about me...

Gary ’Bala G’ Wright spent his childhood growing up within and around North Queensland, Torres Strait, Thursday Island and indigenous communities such as Bamaga, Seisia, New Mapoon and Injinoo. The word ‘Bala’ comes from Torres Strait Creole meaning brother and ‘G’ is short for Gary. The Wright’s family home is located within the Islander community of Seisia. His connection with indigenous culture lies through the descendants of Saibai Island (Crocodile clan), whom relocated to Seisia in the 1947 after a tidal wave hit the island.

Gary’s love for bodybuilding started in his early years after his mother returned from Thursday Island with a bodybuilding magazine with huge real life bodybuilders on the front cover. At age 15 his training began at home in Seisia and continued more seriously in the high school gym at boarding school in Cairns. Working out and following a muscle building diet from age 16-28 “Bala G” decided to enter his first bodybuilding competition while living in Perth Western Australia in 2010 after working as a Stockbroker. Placing 1st in the IFBB (International federation of Bodybuilding) Novice division, then placing 1st overall against all weight division winners it was then on to the nationals in Sydney two weeks later where he won Novice Mr Australia. Within weeks "Bala G" was featured on the front cover Australian Ironman Magazine. A string of other media appearances followed along with guest posing at local competitions and other guest appearances.

In 2013 Gary was invited by the head of the Australian IFBB Pro leauge to compete for his IFBB Pro card at the open pro qualifier in Melbourne. This was to be his second competition prep and 3rd time on stage. Still getting to know his body Gary tied for 3rd place against a line up of seasoned Australian champions.

2014 the IFBB added a new division the 212 pound category (96kg and under) which by unanimous decision Gary won becoming the first Australian 212 pro in history and the first profesional bodybuilder to ever come out of Cairns and Far North Queensland.
